How To Protect Gums From Irritation After A Periodontal Surgery

Dental patients may experience a slight discomfort when the anesthesia wears off after periodontal surgery has been performed. Dentist or periodontist may prescribe acetaminophen tablets to keep dental patients comfortable. To protect your gums from irritation, a periodontal pack is placed over your gums. The periodontal packs are used to prevent pain, aids healing and enables the patient to resume usual routines or activities in comfort. In a few hours, the pack will harden and after which it can withstand most of the forces of chewing without breaking off. It may take time that the dental patient becomes accustomed to it. Do not remove the pack because it should remain in place as long as possible. If you find that the particles of the pack chip off during the week, and as long as you don't experience pain, do not be concerned. However, if a piece of the pack breaks off and you are experiencing pain causing irritation on your tongue or cheek you should inform your dentist as soon as possible. Replacing the pack can remedy the problem. And it can be removed at your next dental appointment.
